Reservas Tequila is dedicated to bringing artisanal, small batch, hand crafted spirits to Canada, with a focus on the Spirits of Mexico. While we began this journey with Tequila and Agave Spirits, we were drawn to explore the complexities and nuances of other craft spirits, and how distillation is as much art as it is science. Like craft spirit producers, at Reservas Tequila we care about what you drink, and we have hand-selected some of the finest spirits for you to enjoy. We deal directly with owners and master distillers of tequilerias, palenques, and distilleries that have gotten away from the industrial, high-volume output of the ‘big brands’, and are getting back to the basics: quality ingredients, small-batch distilling, a little time, and a lot of care – all to provide you with an experience like no other.
Bringing artisanal, handcrafted, small-batch spirits to Canada, with a focus on the Spirits of Mexico
In a VW bug and equipped with little more than a change of clothes, Karen and Dominic stumbled upon the magical land of Mezcal.
Long before the resurgence of Mezcal, in a VW bug and equipped with little more than a change of clothes, Karen and Dominic headed to the mountains of Oaxaca in an effort to escape the coastal heat of August, and stumbled upon the magical land of Mezcal. In a self-guided ‘tour’, they fell in love with mezcal and agave spirits and how they are rooted in the land, people, and culture of Mexico. They took their first chance they had go back to Mexico and moved to Guadalajara in 2005 where they were introduced to the world of Tequila, gaining knowledge of the product and industry while living in the region of Denomination of Origin of the spirit. With the knowledge acquired in their time spent in Guadalajara, Dominic and Karen recognized the lack of options in Canada with respect to 100% de Agave Tequila, as well as the increasing popularity of the spirit. In 2010, Karen and Dominic returned to Guadalajara and dedicated their time to learning everything they could about tequila and agave spirits – the terroir, the process, the chemistry, the aging, and how every detail and subtlety influences the final product.
The combination of Dominic’s education in aquatic toxicology and fluency in Spanish provides meticulous critical thinking and language skills, as well as a thorough understanding of the chemistry and process behind the production of agave spirits. His passion for food and drink and the idea that culture is rooted in precisely this has led Dominic, with is wife Karen, on this path.
After completing her MA at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, Karen wanted to follow her passion in sales and marketing. What could be better than starting her own business with her husband Dominic? Karen provides unprecedented insight into global trends grounded in fashion and design, exceptional people skills, and a unique approach to sales.
